In His Grasp,

Dewey Yates
Executive Director- We Care Hawkins County

Who We Are….

Dewey Yates, Executive Director

Dewey is our “old timer”. 70+ years old, “retired”, sober just over half his life. “I just can’t see myself quitting”. He had his last drink St. Pat’s Day, 1988. A dear departed friend prayed him into AA, where he entered long term freedom from alcoholism. Dewey took a long sabbatical from recovery programs to throw himself into his job, family and church. “I was running from my calling”, to put it succinctly (which he never does). Dewey and his wife Dawn (our board secretary) moved to East TN in 2021 and his calling caught him. First try-a Life Recovery meeting at Hope Community Church, where he and Dawn are committed members. Thud. But the founders of the now closed Veterans Center of East TN heard about it, and invited them to bring a meeting to their downtown Rogersville location. As an outgrowth of that, Dewey became a CPRS, and also a Certified Recovery Coach.

After an abortive attempt at working with a outpatient treatment center, Dewey and Dawn decided to open We Care. Our Veterans in Recovery Director, Dan Stevens, found our home on Church and Washington in Rogersville. After much searching (and rejecting), We Care has a home! On May 1, 2025 Dan and Raysha Cowan (H&I director) held the ribbon as Dewey cut it, officially opening We Care Hawkins County! Here, it’s “Taking Addiction Head on!” Buckle up!

Daniel Stevens, VIR (Veterans in Recovery) Director

Daniel is a Marine. Period. Not former, not ex, a MARINE. He served both in domestic and overseas postings, ex. Okinawa, Japan, and a deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His time in service demonstrated dedication and leadership skills. Dan earned the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medal and the Good Conduct Medal. His experiences in the military, both home and abroad, shaped a deep understanding and empathy for the physical and emotional toll that military service can cause. In his roles at We Care, he uses those experiences to walk a mile in the shoes of those who’ve served.

After being diagnosed with Charcot arthropathy (foot) in 2020, Dan faced a life altering journey. Unable to walk for nearly two years, he underwent a below-the knee amputation in 2022. What looked like to him the end of the road became the beginning of another. Through his own recovery from physical trauma, depression, and suicidal ideation, Dan found his purpose-helping others find healing and hope, as he did.

Dan has been an integral part of We Care since its inception in April 2025. He uses his story to inspire those who feel lost, forgotten, or broken. As a veteran, he understands the unique challenges faced by those who’ve served. Everything Dan does is a reflection of that insight. He brings that full bore to everything he does. Every outreach event, every support session, Dan shows his commitment to what’s become his calling.

Leisure time for Dan is outside! Fishing and shooting guns are a mind clearing pastime for Dan. He also makes his own fishing lures for family and friends.
